Many Asians across the globe celebrate the mid-autumn or Moon festival on the fullest moon of the year. Did you see that harvest moon rising over your neighborhood last night? It was HUGE!
They celebrate with family reunions, lots of tasty food (as usual), and as night falls, the children light up colorful lanterns and walk around their communities.
It has its roots in worship of the Moon goddess Chang E, but these days, most people associate the festival with lantern parades and traditional mooncakes. 🥮
When we used to be back in Asia during this time of year, we always bought a bunch of the hand-painted cellophane animal lanterns to bring back home.

Our own child started out life by sleeping in his own crib down the hallway, but around age 2 or 3, he started coming to our bed in the middle of the night almost every night. Did us parents get better sleep? Not really. Did it make our child feel comforted and loved and did it help him fall back asleep right away? It certainly did! How do you handle those middle-of-the-night situations?

Hello everyone! Introducing myself to all of you who are new to this page.
I have always been a creative person, even as a young child, so it came as no surprise that design became my profession. For my day job, I started out designing hardware for consumer electronics. In recent years, I've focused mostly on health-tech design, and was able to lead some innovative projects that focused on pediatric health.
One of those was the Kitten scanner, a child-sized play CT-scanner with toy patients that children can try out before their appointment to reduce their anxiety. Another was a Neonatal intensive care environment that supports the baby’s development and provides a soothing and calming environment for families, in addition to addressing workflow and care delivery needs of clinicians. Last but not least, my team collaborated with a pediatric hospital to create a first-of-kind adaptive environment for adolescent behavioral health patients in the Emergency Department.
Given all that, the leap to LuMi was not that big! Doodling in the evenings and over weekends when my wife was pregnant with our son, I wanted to design something that would help us with our our nightly activities as new parents without disturbing each other or our baby. All the nightlights on the market at the time were either too bright, made from hard plastic, were too complex to use or not portable. So Lumi was born, combining the timeless quality of a plush doll with the soft magical glow of a lantern.
Unfortunately we decided to manufacture LuMi right before Covid hit, which meant that everything was delayed by more than a year. And because of scarcity and the almost total standstill in commercial shipping, prices for everything from materials to shipping went WAY up.
But, looking back, I wouldn't have missed this experience for the world. I learned so much as a first-time entrepreneur. But the most rewarding of all is hearing from all of you–our initial crowdfunding supporters, early field testers and customers–about how LuMi helped your child and your family.

This is why we do what we do! I keep thinking about this customer review, imagining how scared the little girl must have been that she felt she had to scream her way to her parents' room. And imagining her brother and parents waking up to her screaming every night, which would be startling to say the least!
So glad LuMi gave her the confidence she needed to make the trek down that hallway and be less scared.
